King George Renovation

Perched high on a hill, this 1920's home was renovated to reconnect it with the 180 degree views of the ocean beyond.

Renovating a home requires a clear vision for how to maximize the potential of the project, within the constraints of the existing structure. The existing second floor was dark, with two small dormers and almost no windows to the expansive ocean view of the Juan de Fuca straight. Fold worked closely with the Client to redesign the upper floor by adding a large shed dormer, view windows, and a primary suite with walk in closet. Additional scope included a fully redesigned chef kitchen, new windows, landscaping, and updated bathrooms. The new design reflects the character of the existing home, while optimizing the best features of the site.

"Before" images capture the home in its original configuration.

Many elements of the design were shaped in close collaboration with the Client; the interior layout of the main floor was largely preserved, though the wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed to create a stronger connection between the two spaces. The kitchen was reimagined with custom millwork and metal detailing to maximize storage, while closets and bathrooms were carefully planned within existing structural and zoning constraints, to make the most of every square inch.

The Client wished to retain some elements of the existing home, such as the entry door and vestibule and the guard surrounding the south facing sundeck. We adjusted the roof of the entry vestibule to accommodate the new addition above, and retained the existing entry door.
