This project involves a full retrofit of an existing two-storey commercial building in Victoria. The mixed-use program features an independent bookstore, a coffee shop, and a fine-dining restaurant. The bookstore is envisioned as both a retail space and a cultural hub, hosting author launches and other literary events. At the heart of the building, an open auditorium is carved into the central volume, offering raked seating for gatherings, flexible informal space for bookstore patrons, and a striking focal point for the entire project.
Fold Architects undertook detailed coordination of the complex program to reconcile the exacting demands of the program and design with the complex regulatory environment for restaurants and public spaces, to ensure that the inspirational spark of this unique venue remained at the center of the design process.
