Accessible Living Complex

The project is designed so people of all abilities can live independently in a socially enriching environment. This is achieved with a central courtyard to encourage and provide space for social cohesion within the community. Extensive planting on roof decks and courtyard incorporates nature in the building for enhanced psychological health.

The desired outcome is to create a place where individuals of all abilities can feel belonging, not just accommodation, form community, contribute to the economy and social space of Invermere and truly thrive.

In British Columbia, over 20% of people between the ages of 15 and 65 identify themselves as living with one or more disabilities. With an aging population, people who live with disabilities are the fastest growing minority group in Canada. This statistic is particularly pronounced in retirement-oriented communities like Invermere BC. Invermere is also a training ground for Olympic and Paralympic athletes in Canada, which increases the need for universally accessible facilities, urban spaces and homes.

The development team of the Invermere Accessible Living Plaza identified the unique need of this community as an ideal location for a prototype affordable residential model that puts accessibility and human dignity in the forefront. The program required all suites and parking spaces to meet standards for accessibility with material and construction consideration for people with sensory sensitivity.

A mix of large and small suites are included for individuals, families, shared homes and support-workers, so residents don't need to choose between a suitable home and the person they want to share it with.

This project is currently in Concept Design.
